Our Identity in Christ (The Shorter Version)

Written by Larry M. Jaynes:

Jesus Christ completely identified with sinful man by giving his precious life and blood for humanity upon the cross.  The resurrected Christ Jesus now gives believers a new identity in him through his resurrection. He is our big brother, our only Savior, and our special interceder. The more we learn about Christ Jesus from the Scriptures, the more we will truly find ourselves to be in him for eternity.

Colossians 3:1 – IF ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

The word “IF” means since, and since we are truly spiritually risen with Christ to the right hand of God, we are also instructed to seek those things that are above. Well what is above? Christ is for starters, he is physically in heaven and spiritually within our hearts while we are physically on earth but we are spiritually risen with Christ into the heavenlies to the elevated position of being in Christ in heaven at God’s own right hand. God’s wisdom comes from above (James 3:17), from where we are encouraged to seek our own spiritual identity that we currently have in Christ.

Colossians 3:2 – Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

The word “affection” is the word for our thinking, it is the word used for thoughts in the reasoning process that men and women have, especially regarding spiritual matters. We as believes are encouraged to look to the Scriptures and think about what they say we have from God. Some Christians never even consider what the Scriptures reveal to us regarding spiritual matters. Some think only about things on the earth, and they completely miss out on pure heavenly glimpses that God reveals with spiritual realities that are not only all around, but come from God from above.

Colossians 3:3 – For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

Well, being dead does not sound all that terrific! Yet what this means from the Greek text is that spiritually we have died to sin, and now we are spiritually risen to completely live life in the glory of God. What does it mean to say our lives have been hid?  It means that we are spiritually with God, where His divinely given treasures are freely given to us. God’s healing Word comes to life proportionally to our believing in it, and the true treasures of God live in the heart, from where all believing emanates.

Colossians 3:4 – When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

When shall Christ appear? When he returns for us! The life of Christ is our true spiritual life because everything that he is, is already spiritually within us, giving each believer the absolute identity of Christ himself. The more that we learn about Christ Jesus, then, the more we will learn about ourselves and our God-given identity. We: the children of God will absolutely appear with Christ in glory. This may sound almost too good to be true, yet it is true because God’s Word says it is so, for the Word of God lives and abides forever (I Peter 1:23)! Not only is Christ our life and our true identity, but we shall reign with him in all of his magnificent glory.
