Written by Larry M. Jaynes:
And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?
Jesus had joined up with two of his disciples as they were walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus, and they did not recognize Jesus because they thought him to be crucified and buried. However, the power of God resurrected Jesus, and his two disciples could not even conceive that the man walking with them was actually the Christ, the Son of the living God. As they walked, Jesus began teaching them the Scriptures.
And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
This is a wondrous thing that Jesus had just done, explaining how the Scriptures were written of him. Jesus opened their eyes to the magnificence of God’s Word and how the Word itself is a testimony of Jesus. That is one fellowship teaching that I would have loved to attend because Jesus had opened their understanding of the Scriptures. The expounded Word caused them to say, “Did not our heart burn within us” because when the Scriptures begin to make sense, life itself takes on a new exciting meaning, for we begin walking hand in hand with the Savior and in fellowship with the Creator.
They did not recognize Jesus until he prayed at their dinner table and when Jesus prayed he vanished before their eyes. Jesus did this with his new resurrected body; this kind of body we will receive when Christ returns for us (Philippians 3:20-21). We will receive a body that will live forever, that can appear and disappear at will, a body that can travel the lengths of the universe and back in the blink of an eye, a body that will never wear out or tire, and this is fathoms beyond (and above) walking on water! For now, we have the glorious hope of our complete redemption when Christ returns to take us home to heaven, and we have the greatness of God’s wonderful Word that causes our hearts to burn with excitement and joy.
And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
God’s Word spiritually builds us up, and shows us that we have an eternal inheritance with Him, and for now we can enjoy the current sanctification with which God has set us apart for heaven.
My prayer for you is that God will continue to open your understanding of His healing Word so that your heart can burn with excitement for having received the Word of God’s grace.
