God Is Love

I John 4:8:
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

God is love! The Greek word for love is agapee, and is the spiritual love of God that not only is a characteristic of Him, but also is something that God has given to His children. The phrase, “He that loveth not knoweth not God;” contains a double negative to boost the positive reality that believers not only can love with God’s love, but they will also come to know God Who is love.

Ephesians 5:1-2a:
-1: BE ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
-2a: And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us. . .

Not only is God love, but we are also encouraged to “walk in love.” How are we to walk in love? We love as Christ has loved us. Jesus Christ was the Son of God and he walked in love in his daily life toward his fellow man, and we are told in Ephesians to be followers of God as His dear children in the same way that Jesus Christ was. Now let us notice in Ephesians 5:1 the word “therefore,” because its usage has a specific purpose that will help us to become followers of God. In order to fully understand the word “therefore” we will need to go back two verses.

Ephesians 4:31-32:
-31: Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:
-32: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.

By putting away ill thoughts and words and by being kind, tenderhearted, and forgiving one another, this is how to follow God. God forgives us for the sake of Jesus Christ who had given his life for you and me. So in order for believers to “walk in love, as Christ also hath loved,” we will therefore want to be kind, tenderhearted, and forgiving as well. Then the walk of love becomes a reality.

I John 4:16:
And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.

In the Bible Byte “Understanding God”, we saw one of the names of God was “I AM” and now we have come all the way to understanding Him in His love, for we are currently dwelling in Him and He is dwelling in us. Believers can grasp the magnificence of all God has presented to us, and how much Christ has introduced the Father to us by his life, death, resurrection, and ascension, as he stands at the right hand of God continuously interceding on our behalf (Romans 8:34). The Word of God always points the believers in the right direction, showing how to believe what it says and showing how God in Christ is always at work to help believers into the ways of God’s love. “And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for {the return of} Christ {for us}” (II Thessalonians 3:5).
