Nahum – Revealing Our Stronghold

Written by Larry M. Jaynes:

In the Book of Nahum, Jesus Christ is revealed as our stronghold in the day of trouble. Jesus Christ as God’s representative not only gives us God’s strength, but also God’s deliverance from any and all the troubles that may come our way day to day. Looking to Jesus Christ moment by moment can become a lifestyle in thankfulness for receiving God’s divine grace upon our lives.

The more we know Jesus Christ, the more he introduces us into the true ways of God, showing us the spiritual realities of our God-given stronghold that we have through Christ.

Nahum 1:7 – The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.

“The Lord is good” rather than vengeful against His people, yet today society itself teaches that God does render to us evil when we make mistakes and fall into trouble. However, God is good to His children!

God gives us a stronghold to hold onto when we are in trouble of any kind and thus when we know Him as our stronghold, then we can begin trusting in Him to save and deliver us. We learn to trust in our God through Christ’s name which is given to us by God (John 16:23).

II Timothy 2:19 – Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure {unbreakable}, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his {you and I}. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity {wrongdoing}.

“Depart from iniquity” is first a request from God, also our departure from wrongdoing can happen effortlessly in and around our lives when we continue looking to the stronghold we have in the powerful name of Jesus Christ. When we take our guidance from the Scriptures and begin walking with God, then negatives will begin to fall by the wayside. This will continue strengthening our believing and anticipation of the blessings that God will next bestow upon our lives.

The word, “knoweth” is an interesting word in the Greek Text for it means to know by experience with a conscious effort, and this is how God knows us. He took the time to know exactly who we are; He is so intimately acquainted with us that the Bible says that He has numbered the very hairs on our heads (Matthew 10:29-31).

Psalms 139:1-5:
-1: O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me.
-2: Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.
-3: Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.
-4: For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.
-5: Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me.

God knew us before we were even born, He knows everything about us, and yes, thankfully yes, He loves us just as we are with all our frailties!

Hebrews 13:5-8:
-5: Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. {Well, praise God!}
-6: So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.
-7: Remember them which have the rule over you {those who watch over your spiritual lives}, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith {believing faith} follow, considering the end of their conversation {their conversation about Jesus Christ}.
-8: Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to-day, and for ever.

As the believers in the Old Testament had the belief in the coming of their Messiah, Jesus Christ, they could see him as their personal stronghold.

Today in the New Testament, Jesus Christ is Our Stronghold, and he continues revealing the ways of God as he will do for us “forever.”
