“CHILDREN, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother: which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth– Ephesians 6:1-3. When we read the Ten Commandments from the Old Testament (Exodus 20:1-17), we will see that the first commandment contains a promise which is stated, above. However, please understand that this section in Ephesians is sometimes used to scare children half to death by telling them that if they do not obey, then they cannot live long! That is cruel and abusive treatment, and no promise of God given to any believer in God’s graces contain threats, doubts, or maybes. This is why the very next verse Ephesians 6:4 we read, And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath.
This first commandment with promise was not spoken to little children at all but to the children of Israel, grown up people, and the scope of this promise was to ensure that they would have a continued inheritance in the land, that they would live long as a ‘nation’ in that promised land of milk and honey. God does instruct fathers to teach the Word of God to their children to obey their parents, and again the promise follows that the fathers shall prolong your days in the land (see Deuteronomy 32:46-47), again with reference to their receiving and enjoying the promised inheritance.” ~LMJ~
