Timothy – Revealing Our Faithful Witness

Written by Larry M. Jaynes:

I and II Timothy are leadership Epistles; these Paul wrote to Timothy to help perfect his abilities in taking care of God’s people. Timothy also reveals great insights about how to be a leader and faithful witness of Jesus Christ within the Church of God, showing many principles that can help people walk into the greatness of caring for God’s children.

I Timothy shows God’s Church in the light of being at its apex, flourishing in the greatness of all of the spiritual truths of receiving divine grace as is recorded in the Church Epistles, while II Timothy shows God’s Church in its ruin by leaders who had rejected and abused God’s grace.

They took God’s Church and began dividing it up into several groups (or sects), by their refuting of God’s grace, as the Church as a whole began slipping back into a legalistic lifestyle apart from God’s grace.

However, II Timothy also details how to rise back again up to the liberating truths that they once had in Christ, which God has given to His children to enjoy in His divine grace; God’s grace becomes manifested in our lives when we become faithful witnesses of Christ.

I Timothy 1:15-16:
-15: This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I {Paul} am chief.
-16: Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering {patience}, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.

The Apostle Paul was a persecutor of Christians; thus, he was a chief sinner.  However, God called him to be a faithful witness of Christ as Christ himself is the faithful witness and he sets the pattern for those who would look to him and “believe on him to life everlasting.”

I Timothy 2:6 – Who {Jesus Christ} gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

Jesus Christ is our example whom we can “pattern” our lives after, who gave himself a ransom for all. How many people got missed? None! Jesus gave himself for all, and this is the “testimony” that believers today can have on their lips, as we become faithful witnesses of our resurrected Lord and Savior.

Often we can look at people and think, “we could never save that person, just look at the way he behaves,” yet quite often these people have been waiting all their lives for someone to say “Hey, God loves you, did you know that Christ gave his life for you?” This is testifying and being faithful witnesses and this is God’s calling to His children, and certainly today is the due time.

If they reject us, then they reject Christ because we are his witnesses who walk in his steps. However, whether we receive a positive response or a negative one, we were never called to harass or present hell fire and condemnation to people because our example, Jesus Christ, displayed the love of God even when people refused him. He simply loved people where they were at, and continued being an upfront and honest witness of his Father as we can be today.

If someone does not believe today, who knows? Perhaps tomorrow they will, but if we hassle them half to death and harass them, then perhaps tomorrow they will not believe. Besides when we are walking with God – God will bring people directly to us, because we have a heart to bless and enlighten people with the liberating grace that we have in Christ.

I Timothy 6:12-15:
-12: Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed {confessed} a good profession {confession} before many witnesses.
-13: I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth {gives life to} all things, and before Christ Jesus who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession {Jesus never condemned Pilate};
-14: That thou keep this commandment without spot {to witness with a good confession regarding spiritual matters}, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:
-15: Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate {the mighty prince and ruler, because he is}, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;

When we are blessed and simply live in the love of God, then we will attract others to our spiritual love.  The true witnessing will happen effortlessly.  This is the good fight of faith because people will want the eternal life that we enjoy and offer to anyone who wants it.

When we witness to anyone, we are always in the sight of God and of Christ. They will always be extremely blessed when we walk in the steps of Christ who is to us Our Faithful Witness, who was always faithful to speak from his heart about the blessed and eternal life on which he (and we) have laid hold.
